Toray Resin Company: PBT, ABS, and the Searches Buyers Keep Asking

Find the Right Toray Division Before Anything Else

When I started in materials procurement, I assumed one corporate website would answer everything. It didn't. Toray is a large company with many divisions. Carbon fiber gets the most attention, but for plastic resin buyers the relevant business is Toray Resin Company. If you search for the Toray logo, you'll land on the corporate site. That's a fine starting point, but not a material selection tool. Search 'Toray Resin Company' directly. And if you end up on Toray Plastics America, remember that division is mostly films—not the injection molding compounds you need.

I'd rather spend ten minutes explaining the difference than deal with mismatched expectations later. There is no single 'best Toray plastic.' The right grade depends on what your part does, how it's made, and when the next production slot closes. So let's split this into three scenarios.

Scenario 1: Your Part Faces Heat, Creep, or Tight Tolerances — Look at PBT Plastic

PBT plastic (polybutylene terephthalate) is a semi-crystalline polyester. It resists creep, stays dimensionally stable, and absorbs less moisture than nylon. That makes it a common starting point for automotive connectors, relay cases, ignition components, and electrical housings.

Toray's PBT line is TORAYCON. According to Toray Resin Company's product pages (accessed February 2025), the TORAYCON family includes unreinforced and glass-fiber-reinforced grades for injection molding. Test methods such as ISO 527 are used for tensile data, so compare datasheets on the same standard. A 30% glass-reinforced grade is often the first one engineers try, but the right choice depends on flow length, part temperature, and the real failure mode.

In March 2024, I had a customer with a line-down situation: 1,500 kilograms of PBT, 72 hours to delivery. Normally I'd want a week. We found the same grade at a distributor, paid an expedite fee, and had test plaques run before anything else. I want to say the fee was around $1,800, but don't quote me on that. Should mention: we had already qualified that grade six months earlier, so we weren't guessing. The alternative was roughly $40,000 in lost production. That experience stuck with me. PBT isn't 'the best resin'—it's the best option when heat and dimensional stability are the failure mode.

One caveat: PBT can warp in thin-wall geometry. Don't choose it just because it's a polyester. And don't move from PBT to PA66 without checking humidity and temperature requirements.

Scenario 2: You Need Impact Resistance and a Good-Looking Surface — Look at ABS

ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) is an amorphous plastic that takes impact and still finishes well. Think power tool housings, instrument panels, vacuum cleaner bodies, and interior trim. It molds with predictable shrinkage and accepts texture easily.

Toray's ABS brand is TOYOLAC. The product range includes standard, flame-retardant, and heat-resistant grades. If you're sourcing in volume, compare several grades before committing to a datasheet. ABS is a family, not one formula. The ratio of acrylonitrile, butadiene, and styrene changes impact strength, heat resistance, and surface gloss.

Now, about a search term I've seen more than once: 'plastic drake abs.' I'm pretty sure that's a typo for 'plastic drain ABS.' ABS pipe and fittings are common for drain-waste-vent systems. If that's what you're actually buying, you're not looking for an injection molding resin—you're looking for an ABS pipe supplier. If you are molding a drain component, then TOYOLAC is a reasonable place to start.

For ABS, the procurement risk is usually color and finish, not the resin itself. I've seen rush orders fail because someone accepted 'close enough' on a regrind ratio. An ABS part can be molded in a day. A color match can take a week. Build that into your schedule.

Scenario 3: You Asked 'Is Polyethylene Glycol Plastic?' — No

Let's answer the exact question: is polyethylene glycol plastic? No. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is not a plastic. It's a polymer, but it's a polyether that is usually a liquid or waxy solid depending on molecular weight. It dissolves in water. Plastics are solid materials that can be molded or extruded into durable parts. PEG is used in laxatives, ointments, cosmetics, and industrial solvents—not as a structural plastic.

Part of the confusion is the name. Polyethylene (PE) is a plastic: milk jugs, pipe, films. Polyethylene glycol sounds similar but has a different repeating unit and behavior. If you're researching Toray and ran into this question, you probably want polyethylene terephthalate (PET) or PBT, not PEG.

So no. Not a plastic. Save that answer for the next team meeting.

How to Know Which Scenario You're In

Here's the framework I use when a rush request lands on my desk. It takes ten minutes, and it has saved me from ordering the wrong material more times than I can count.

  • If the failure mode is heat, creep, or dimensional drift: start with PBT plastic. Then check whether the continuous-use temperature is within PBT's range.
  • If the failure mode is impact or appearance: start with ABS. If you need more heat resistance or impact strength, consider a PC/ABS blend with documented test data.
  • If you're asking 'is polyethylene glycol plastic?': stop comparing datasheets and fix the terminology first. PEG is not a plastic.

For compounders reading this: the logic is the same, but you'll also care about melt flow consistency and additive packages. Toray's base resins are sold for conversion, so verify lot-to-lot data before you compound.

When the Deadline Is Real, Don't Skip Verification

I have mixed feelings about rush fees. On one hand, they feel like a tax on someone else's poor planning. On the other, I've seen the operational reality of expedited resin supply—production schedules get shuffled, trucks get rerouted, and someone has to pay for it. So I get it.

But the non-negotiable part is verification. Even with a 48-hour deadline, you can still check the certificate of analysis and test a few molded plaques. Twice in my career I've seen rush orders skip that step. One cost the customer $8,000 in scrap. The other passed, but only because the molder had a same-day lab relationship.

So glad we ran those test plaques before the PBT order. Almost skipped them to stay on schedule, and I still think about how close we came to a bad batch. In rush resin supply, you often pick two: speed, certainty, or cost. Make the trade-off consciously.
