Buyer FAQ: Toray carbon fiber and resins
I handle material purchasing for a custom molding shop. For about eight years, I have ordered carbon fiber, engineering resins, and specialty compounds. I have personally documented six significant mistakes, totaling roughly $14,000 in wasted budget. My worst errors all followed the same pattern: I assumed, skipped verification, and paid later. Now I keep a checklist. 1. What is the real Toray T1100 carbon fiber tensile strength?
If you are looking at Toray T1100 because of one tensile strength number, back up one step. Toray’s carbon fiber line includes grades like T300, T800, T1000G, and T1100G. According to Toray’s published product data, T300 is listed at 3,530 MPa tensile strength. The higher intermediate modulus grades go up from there: T1000G sits around 6.4 GPa, and the T1100G family is in the 6.6 GPa class with a tensile modulus around 324 GPa. Verify the current datasheet before quoting these numbers to a customer; published values are typical results, not per-lot certifications.
The stronger grade is not automatically the right grade. What matters in a part includes fiber tensile strength, modulus, strain-to-failure, areal weight, and how the fiber sizing works with your resin system. I made the mistake of switching a part to a high-strength fiber without checking the resulting laminate thickness. The part did not fit the assembly. Not the fiber’s fault. My specification was incomplete.
2. Is PLA plastic?
Yes. PLA, or polylactic acid, is a thermoplastic polyester. Under standard material definitions, it is a plastic. It can be processed like plastic and behaves like plastic. What makes the question confusing is that PLA is often derived from renewable feedstocks and marketed as biodegradable.
Biodegradable always has conditions. PLA typically requires high-temperature industrial composting to break down quickly. It also has lower heat resistance than PET, ABS, or nylon. In July 2022, I selected a PLA-based tray for a field trial. It molded fine, but sagged in a parked delivery truck. The material was not defective; the application temperature was outside what I had specified. Treat PLA as a plastic with a specific thermal profile and a specific disposal requirement, not as a material that is completely different from plastic.
3. Is PTFE a plastic?
Yes, PTFE is a plastic. It belongs to the fluoropolymer family, and its full chemical name is polytetrafluoroethylene. Technically, it is often described as a semi-crystalline thermoplastic, but do not put it in the same procurement category as injection-moldable thermoplastics like ABS or nylon.
PTFE has extremely high melt viscosity. Conventional injection molding machines, screws, and molds designed for ABS, PA, or POM do not handle it well. Many PTFE parts are machined from pressed, ram-extruded, or sintered stock. If you write PTFE under plastic parts and ask for standard injection molding, you will get confusing quotes or no quotes at all.
I learned this while sourcing PTFE bushings. I assumed plastic meant moldable. The real answer was machining from stock for our quantity. A plastic can still be a poor fit for a particular processing method.
4. How do thermoplastic resin distributors affect Toray resin orders?
Thermoplastic resin distributors do more than move boxes. A good distributor can make a Toray resin order run smoothly. A poorly managed distributor can turn an otherwise correct grade into a moisture-contaminated, poorly documented problem.
Before using a distributor, ask for the exact Toray resin grade code, the original manufacturer lot number, and a certificate of analysis or certificate of compliance. Ask about storage conditions and date code. Nylon, PBT, and many specialty compounds can absorb moisture or change handling behavior if stored incorrectly. Oh, and ask how quickly they can support a trial run. Price per kilogram is important, but it is not the whole buying decision.
In late 2023, I received a low-priced quote from a new distributor. The certificate did not include the original lot number. The sales rep said that detail did not matter. For my process, it did. I stayed with the established distributor and requested a sample lot first.
5. Can a substitute Toray resin grade work when the original is backordered?
Sometimes, but only after verification. I learned this in Q1 2024. I had about two days to fill a production gap. Normally I would run a mold trial, but there was no time. A distributor offered a substitute grade with similar melt flow and similar claimed mechanical properties. On paper, it looked close enough.
It was not close enough for the mold. The first production run warped because mold shrinkage was different. The cost was about $3,200 in scrap plus a missed delivery date. At least, that has been my experience with our molds. A larger molder with a lab might approve such a change faster, but the point stays the same: substitution without trial data is a bet. If you must substitute, run samples under actual molding conditions before committing a full production order.
6. What belongs on a Toray resin RFQ?
At minimum, your RFQ should include the material family, the exact Toray resin grade code, the filler or reinforcement, color requirements, additive package, and any regulatory documentation needed. Writing Toray ABS is not enough. Different ABS grades can have different impact resistance, heat resistance, flame retardancy, and UV stability.
In 2018, I specified black ABS for outdoor housings. I meant black, UV-stable ABS with a specific impact requirement. The supplier quoted general-purpose black ABS. We were using the same words but meaning different things. We discovered the mismatch after the parts chalked and cracked outdoors. I want to say that order was around $4,200, but I might be misremembering the exact total. The lesson was clear: use the full grade code, and keep a copy of the current datasheet attached to the RFQ.
7. What is my quick pre-order checklist?
This is the checklist I now use for every Toray-related order:
- Confirm the exact manufacturer grade code on the purchase order.
- Check the current manufacturer datasheet, not an old email quote.
- Request the original lot code and certificate of analysis.
- Confirm drying and storage requirements for moisture-sensitive resins.
- For carbon fiber, verify fiber areal weight, modulus, sizing, and resin compatibility. Tensile strength alone does not answer the processing question.
- For PLA, PTFE, or any material called plastic, separate the polymer family from the actual processing method.
Five minutes of checking is cheaper than five days of root-cause analysis. The mistakes I made paid for this checklist. I hope you do not have to pay for it again.
