The bottom line from a buyer who has made these mistakes
I coordinate purchasing for a 260-person industrial manufacturer in Ohio. Since 2020 I have managed roughly $1.1M in annual non-production spending across 40 vendors, and I report to both operations and finance. That makes me the person who gets the strange one-off requests, and most of the strange requests involve one word: resin.
Ask five people what resin means and you will get five answers. To a molding operator, it is plastic pellets. To someone in product development, it might be myrrh resin, a plant-based gum from Commiphora trees. Early in this job I spent an afternoon collecting quotes for ABS pellets because a requester said resin and I filled in the blank. They meant myrrh resin for a natural-material experiment. That day taught me a rule I still use: identify the application before you identify the supplier.
After five years and a few hundred purchase orders, the most useful thing I believe is this: there is no best plastic. There is only the right plastic for a specific job. The right material for a short-use glove is wrong for an outdoor enclosure, and the right enclosure material might be overkill for a high-volume molded component.
So I separate every material request into four scenarios. Each one points to a different product family, supplier, and checklist:
- Disposable gloves for short, low-risk tasks.
- Rigid plastic parts or enclosures.
- Raw resin delivered to a production line.
- Natural resin, like myrrh resin, for a non-plastics application.
Scenario 1: When polyethylene plastic gloves are the right purchase
If your search term is “polyethylene plastic gloves,” you are probably trying to solve a cheap and common problem: keep hands clean during food prep, light cleaning, unpacking cartons, or sorting parts. Polyethylene (PE) film gloves are a reasonable answer for that list. They are inexpensive, and for short tasks they do the job.
The line I repeat to my own team: PE gloves are not chemical gloves. Solvents, oils, and aggressive cleaners can degrade the film or pass through it. If the task involves chemicals, buy nitrile instead, and treat the higher price as insurance.
The belief I had to unlearn is that a thicker polyethylene glove is a safer glove. It is not. A thicker PE film has the same chemical limits; it just costs more and makes hands tired faster. What actually reduced complaints here was switching from smooth film to embossed film. Fingers stop sticking together, people can put gloves on quickly, and the same box lasts longer. Small specification change, real difference.
If the gloves will touch food, ask the supplier for documentation that the PE complies with applicable food-contact rules (in the US, 21 CFR 177.1520 is the section I look for). And if marketing wants custom printed glove boxes, send the printer a file at 300 DPI at final size. Commercial print expects 300 DPI at final size; a logo pulled off a webpage will not meet it.
Scenario 2: When you are buying a rigid plastic part or enclosure
The next request is often phrased like this: “We need enclosures for the new controller, and we think ABS.” That is when the search term “what is ABS plastic” becomes a procurement issue instead of a trivia question.
What is ABS plastic?
ABS is an amorphous thermoplastic made from three monomers. Acrylonitrile contributes heat and chemical resistance; butadiene adds toughness; styrene gives rigidity and a smooth surface. Manufacturers adjust the ratios, which is why ABS is a family of materials rather than one fixed substance.
You have already touched ABS many times. It shows up in power tool housings, vacuum cleaners, automotive interior trim, keyboard keycaps, and interlocking toy bricks. The common theme is a part that gets dropped, bumped, or handled often and still needs to hold its shape.
The popular idea I push back on is this: ABS is not automatically an upgrade. Standard ABS will chalk and lose gloss in outdoor sun, and it is sensitive to solvents like acetone. If the part lives outside, a UV-stabilized grade or a more weatherable material may be better. If the design uses a living hinge, polypropylene is usually the better starting point. If the part must be clear, ABS is not the material. Choose from requirements, not from habit.
I only learned the grade lesson after ignoring my own rule. In 2023, a new molder quoted our enclosures at 18 percent below the incumbent. The word ABS appeared in the quote, and every spreadsheet said switch. My gut said a red flag was that the molder would not name a specific ABS grade. The spreadsheets won. Three months later, parts that passed incoming inspection started warping between batches, and we scrapped about 500 enclosures. The problem was not ABS. The problem was buying a plastic category instead of a defined grade with a data sheet.
Scenario 3: When you are buying raw resin for manufacturing
The hardest purchases are raw material: bags, boxes, or gaylord containers of pellets delivered to a production line. In that world, a resin family name is not a specification. Polyethylene can be HDPE, LDPE, or LLDPE, with different stiffness, clarity, and heat behavior. ABS can be a general-purpose molding grade, an impact grade, an extrusion grade, or a plating grade. All of them can be sold under the short label “ABS.”
The plastics market has changed since I started in this role. Grades get reformulated, suppliers move production between plants, and compliance paperwork carries more weight than it did in 2020. What was best practice then does not automatically work in 2025. In this environment, traceability is not an extra; it is the main specification.
That is why I treat manufacturer identification as part of the material. When a shipment carries the Toray logo, I expect a clear grade name and lot number on every container. If a bag has no manufacturer mark, no grade code, and no lot traceability, I quarantine it before signing anything. A plain bag can say ABS on it and still be a blend that does not match any published data sheet.
In North America, Toray Plastics America is one of the Toray entities that appears on our approved vendor list for specialty films and plastic products; the same discipline applies to Toray resin purchases through authorized distribution. Toray is known for carbon fiber, but in a typical buying office, engineering resins and compounds are the more common part of the portfolio. Every order is only as good as the documentation behind it.
I also use the packaging itself as a visual check. Brand colors are not decorative; they are controlled. According to Pantone color-matching guidance, a brand-critical color is typically held within about Delta E 2 of its reference. If the red of the Toray logo on a shipment looks washed out or shifted, that does not prove the product is wrong, but it is a good reason to inspect the batch documentation more carefully before accepting.
The same logic applies to every property on a data sheet. When a spec sheet says tensile strength or heat deflection temperature, ask for the test certificate. A number typed into a quotation from memory is not a verified value.
Scenario 4: When resin actually means myrrh resin
Sometimes the request includes words like botanical, fragrance, incense, tincture, or tears. At that moment, stop thinking about polymers. Myrrh resin is a natural gum exuded by Commiphora trees. It is sold by source, color, aroma, purity, and physical form. It has no melt flow index, no heat deflection temperature, and no pellet size.
Calling a plastics supplier to source myrrh resin is a waste of everyone's time, just as calling a botanical supplier for ABS pellets would be. The two product chains are separate. If a request is ambiguous, ask one direct question: is this resin a tree exudate or a synthetic polymer? That question costs ten seconds and prevents a two-week purchasing detour.
There is also a safety side. Natural myrrh resin has legitimate uses in fragrance and material trials. Industrial plastic grades do not belong in those applications. A material described as resin is not interchangeable with another resin merely because the label says the same word.
How to tell which scenario you are in
When a request is vague, I ask three questions before writing a PO:
- What will the material touch? Food, skin, oil, solvents, outdoor UV, or repeated flexing?
- Can the requester name a measurable requirement? For plastic: tensile strength, heat deflection temperature, melt flow, or impact. For natural resin: botanical source, purity, and form.
- What happens if it fails? A torn glove is an inconvenience. A scrapped batch or recalled part is a different cost level. That severity determines whether a branded grade matters.
The answers map to the four scenarios without much effort. Gloves that come on and off in minutes point to Scenario 1. A durable part or enclosure points to Scenario 2. Bags, boxes, or drums of pellets for a production line point to Scenario 3. An aromatic or botanical context points to Scenario 4.
If the requester cannot answer the second question, send the request back. It is not ready for purchase, and no supplier quote will fix that.
The bottom line from a buyer who has made these mistakes
The word plastic hides as much as it reveals. I spent my first years looking for a universal answer. There is not one. What works is a matching process: start with the actual use, define a measurable property, name a specific grade, and verify it when delivery arrives.
It took me about 200 orders and one 500-enclosure mistake to get comfortable with that. If your role resembles mine, do not buy a category. Buy a grade. Check the logo, lot, and documentation before you accept the material, and ask for test certificates before you pay. That routine has saved me more than any supplier discount ever did.
