Toray Plastics: A Cost Buyer's Take on ABS, HDPE 2, and Small Orders

Here's my unfiltered opinion: Toray is not the cheapest material supplier, and that's exactly why I keep signing the purchase orders. If you buy plastic strips, ABS resin, or high-performance carbon fiber, the price per pound is the last number you should trust. I learned that the hard way, and I still kick myself for not learning it sooner.

I'm a procurement manager at a 40-person custom plastics fabricator. I've managed the materials budget—roughly $1.8 million a year—for six years, negotiated with more than 30 vendors, and logged every order in our ERP system. So when I say cheap isn't cheap, I'm not repeating a slogan. I'm describing what my spreadsheets show. I do not mean you should ignore price; I mean you should count the whole cost.

The real cost of a cheap HDPE strip

In Q3 2024, we moved part of our conveyor wear-strip order to a lower-cost extruder. We saved $2,140 on plastic strips over the quarter. By early Q4, four of those strips had cracked at the mounting holes. We shut down the line twice, replaced the strips with our existing stock, and ate $5,900 in labor and lost production. Net result: a $2,140 savings that turned into a $5,900 problem. That's not budgeting; that's arson.

Would a Toray-based HDPE strip have failed? I can't say that, and I won't. But I can say the replacement strips met an HDPE extrusion grade with documented melt flow and environmental stress crack resistance. The cheap strips only had 'HDPE' written on the box.

Small orders, same respect

Here's the part that surprises people: a small order with a qualified supplier is often cheaper than a large order with the wrong one. I'd argue that's true even before you add downtime and warranty costs. A trial order of 50 pounds tells you how the material processes, how the supplier communicates, and whether the paperwork matches the product. That's not squishy relationship talk. That's procurement intelligence.

What is ABS resin? Glad you asked

If you've ever looked at a spec sheet and asked 'what is ABS resin?', you're not alone. ABS is a thermoplastic made from acrylonitrile, butadiene, and styrene. The acrylonitrile brings heat and chemical resistance. The butadiene brings toughness. The styrene brings stiffness and processability. That combination is why ABS shows up in dashboard trim, power tool housings, extruded plastic strips, and countless prototypes.

I've seen buyers treat ABS as a commodity. That's dangerous. There are injection grades, extrusion grades, flame-retardant grades, and weatherable grades. Melt flow changes how it fills a mold. Impact modifier changes how it behaves at 0°F. A cheap ABS that works in one application can crack in another. We dodged a bullet last year when I asked for impact data before approving a 500-kg ABS order. The 'equivalent' grade had half the notched Izod value we required. Half.

On the Toray Plastics side, I've specified ABS, PC/ABS, PA, and PC compounds for parts that need consistency. The engineering resin portfolio covers PE, PP, ABS, PA, and PC—basically my material shortlist. I don't expect a sales rep to know every polymer, but I do expect them to bring up a datasheet when I ask. That matters more than the unit price.

Plastic HDPE 2: the plastic that's harder to buy than it looks

Now let's talk about HDPE. When someone searches 'plastic HDPE 2', they usually mean the resin code on milk jugs. That's a recycling symbol, not a purchase spec. Industrial HDPE is a family: injection grades, blow-molding grades, extrusion grades, and high-performance copolymers. The HDPE for a bottle isn't automatically the right HDPE for a wear strip.

We buy HDPE plastic strips in 4-foot and 8-foot lengths for wear rails, edge guards, and jig fixtures. They look identical until they don't. The extrusion-grade resin has to have the right melt index and environmental stress crack resistance for the application. A lower-priced resin might process fine and then crack during machining or in service. The money you saved melts right off the sheet.

Carbon fiber: where Toray's name gets thrown around

Toray is best known for carbon fiber, and for good reason. The T300 grade has been an aerospace and industrial workhorse for decades. The datasheet lists a typical tensile strength of 3,530 MPa (Source: Toray Composite Materials America, T300 technical data sheet, accessed February 2025). T1000 and T1100 move past that for applications that need even more performance. But I tell every engineer who asks: don't order a carbon fiber grade because the name sounds cool. Order it because the certified mechanical properties match your part's requirements.

That rule applies to every material, not just Toray. If a supplier won't share data sheets, certificates of analysis, or test methods, I walk away. My job is to buy certainty, not mystery.

What small customers really need

Here's where my opinion gets loud. I'm tired of seeing small buyers treated like an inconvenience. When I was starting out, the vendors who took my $300 test orders seriously are the same ones I called when we had a $60,000 annual contract. Small doesn't mean unimportant; it means potential.

Early in my career, I needed a trial quantity of a special PC/ABS blend to validate a new product. We only needed 25 kg. One distributor almost laughed us off the phone. Another one took the order, introduced me to a technical rep, and followed up after the trial. That second vendor kept a Toray Plastics product in front of us for years because they treated a small order like it mattered.

Wait—is Toray actually for small shops?

To be fair, not every Toray product line is stocked in small quantities. Some compounds have minimums, and a direct account can require volume. If you're a small shop, you might buy through a distributor. That's normal. My point isn't that Toray will sell you 10 pounds of anything at 1 AM. My point is that the relationship doesn't have to start with a huge commitment—and when it does start, the technical support should be real.

I also don't buy everything from Toray. For simple commodity film or generic plastic strips where the spec doesn't matter, I'll use whoever has the best certified quote. But for parts that need to survive heat, impact, chemicals, or regulatory scrutiny, I want a supplier with traceable data and a person who answers the phone.

The final cost is the only cost

Granted, this approach requires more upfront work. You have to read datasheets, ask for certificates of analysis, and compare total cost instead of unit price. That's fine. I'd rather spend an hour evaluating a material than a weekend explaining why a part failed.

So here's my position, unchanged: Toray isn't the cheap option, and that's precisely why it's often the economical one. For small orders, for ABS, for HDPE 2, for carbon fiber, buy the data, not the price. You'll still pay real money—but you won't pay twice.
