I Ordered the Wrong Strength

The Spec Sheet Lie

The details matter: specimen geometry, conditioning, and test speed can all shift the result by 10-20%. I used to skip that fine print. Now I read it.
Everything I had read said tensile strength was a good proxy for a tough material. In practice, it’s not. Tensile strength tells you about pulling. It doesn’t tell you about impact, creep, fatigue, or adhesion. The nylon part had enough tensile strength. What it didn’t have was the right balance of elongation and impact resistance for a part that saw repeated abuse.
Even the word “nylon” covers too much. There are filled nylons, impact-modified nylons, glass-reinforced nylons, heat-stabilized nylons. The phrase “nylon tensile strength” makes it sound like one property, but it’s really a long list of different materials with different trade-offs.

- Get processing guidelines from the actual resin producer, not just a middleman.

Next time someone gives you a “nylon tensile strength” number, ask: at what temperature? At what moisture content? Which nylon? If they can’t answer, you haven’t finished sourcing yet. Period.
There’s something satisfying about a part that works the first time. After all the stress of failed orders and the cost of my own mislearning, that’s the payoff. Material specs are useful. They just need to be read as the start of a conversation, not the end.
