Toray Plastics, T1000 Carbon Fiber, and HDPE: A Practical FAQ

Five years ago, sourcing a Toray plastic grade was simple: find a datasheet, call a salesperson, wait for a quote. In 2025, buyers are asking harder questions. They want to know whether T1000 carbon fiber is worth the price, whether Toray makes PTFE resin, and whether HDPE can handle a plastic headband. I've spent the last eight years specifying materials for medical, automotive, and consumer-product customers, and I've processed more than 250 rush material requests. This FAQ gives you the direct answers I'd give on the phone.

What does Toray plastics actually cover?

Toray is much bigger than carbon fiber. The plastics and resin side includes ABS, nylon (polyamide), PBT, PPS, polycarbonate, and specialty compounds. Toray Plastics America is the U.S.-based subsidiary focused mainly on polyester and polypropylene films. When industrial buyers search for Toray plastics, they usually mean the molding resins sold through Toray Resin Company.

From the outside, it looks like one big catalog. The reality is that each grade has different melt flow, impact strength, filler content, and regulatory documentation. You don't order 'Toray plastic.' You order a specific grade for a specific process.

What are the Toray T1000 carbon fiber tensile strength and modulus values?

As of January 2025, Toray's published T1000G data sheet lists a typical tensile strength of 6,370 MPa (924 ksi) and a tensile modulus of 294 GPa (42.6 Msi). The tensile test method is ASTM D4018. For reference, T300 carbon fiber is around 3,530 MPa strength and 230 GPa modulus. T1100G, the higher-performance grade, is around 7,000 MPa strength and 324 GPa modulus.

Strength and modulus are different properties. Strength is the stress at failure. Modulus is stiffness. T1000 gives you a high-strength fiber, but if your part needs more rigidity per unit of load, T1100 or a high-modulus fiber may be a better choice.

Before you commit, ask for a lot-specific mill certificate. Published data sheets are for product selection, not for shipping-lot confirmation. Verify current values at Toray's official carbon fiber product page, because data sheets get revised.

Does Toray make PTFE resin?

Short answer: no, not as a standard Toray resin product. If you landed here by searching toray ptfe resin, this is why: Toray's product range is broad, but PTFE is a fluoropolymer with a different manufacturing base. Major PTFE resin suppliers are the fluoropolymer specialists, not the carbon-fiber-and-resin companies.

That doesn't mean Toray and PTFE never meet. Some specialty Toray compounds use PTFE as a filler or internal lubricant to improve wear in bushings, gears, and sliding parts. But if you need a pure PTFE resin, ask a fluoropolymer specialist. You'll get the right product faster and avoid a long explanation about why the order was wrong.

What is HDPE plastic used for? (And can it work for plastic headbands?)

High-density polyethylene (HDPE) is one of the workhorse plastics in manufacturing. It has a density range of about 0.93 to 0.97 g/cm³ per ASTM D1505. It resists chemicals, absorbs very little moisture, and is inexpensive to process. You'll find HDPE in milk jugs, detergent bottles, water pipes, bottle caps, cutting boards, and plastic headbands.

For a plastic headband, HDPE can work when the part needs a little flex and good chemical resistance. But HDPE isn't the best choice if you want a high-gloss surface, easy paint adhesion, or tight dimensional control. For those requirements, ABS or a polycarbonate/ABS blend is a better material. If cost is the driver and the part doesn't need to look premium, HDPE is still a legitimate option.

How do I get a rush order of Toray material when the schedule changes?

Rush orders are a different game. In one case, a customer needed 150 kg of a Toray ABS grade for a trial mold the next morning. The normal lead time was ten working days. We found the material in a warehouse forty minutes away, arranged early-morning freight, and delivered at 6:00 AM. The extra freight was $270. The customer's alternative was a canceled qualification run and a three-week delay.

In another case, a buyer saved $12 by choosing standard ground shipping, then spent $340 on emergency freight after the material missed the production window. Penny wise, pound foolish. In my role coordinating rush orders for roughly 250 material requests over the past four years, I've learned to ask three questions before promising anything: Is the lot physically available? Does it have a certificate of analysis? What is the cut-off time for next-flight freight?

The fundamentals haven't changed: rush orders still come down to time, feasibility, and risk. But in 2025, you can't rely on a verbal 'it should be fine.' You need confirmation from the warehouse.

What's the smartest way to buy Toray materials without overpaying?

Don't start with price. Start with the exact grade and the property set you need. Buyers often treat ABS as ABS. It isn't. A generic grade might come close on paper but process differently in your mold. I've seen a molded part buyer save $0.15 per kilogram by switching to a substitute resin, then spend $1,800 on machine time chasing a mixing issue. That's a false saving.

The industry has changed too. In 2020, a certificate of analysis was often enough. In 2025, many OEMs require full traceability, batch testing, REACH declarations, and RoHS documents. That paperwork is part of the price. If a supplier offers a significantly lower price without the documentation, ask what's missing. The difference often shows up in paperwork, lot testing, or both.

What mistakes should I avoid when specifying Toray plastics?

Three things trip up buyers.

First, assuming 'same spec' means same behavior. I made that mistake with a rush order of nylon resin. The supplier said the lot was identical to the last one. It wasn't. The moisture content was high, and the molded parts were brittle. Looking back, I should have made a lot-specific certificate a condition of the rush order. At the time, I trusted the voice on the phone. Now it's a hard rule: no certificate, no next-day freight.

Second, ordering T1000 carbon fiber by grade name without confirming the intermediate material parameters. Areal weight, resin content, tow size, and sizing type all affect how the fiber works in a layup. The datasheet alone won't tell you if it will stay in one place during molding.

Third, mixing up Toray Plastics America film products with Toray Resin Company molding compounds. They're different business units with different supply chains. If you need a film, ask for film. If you need a molding resin, ask for resin. The search starts with the product family, not the brand name.
